06. James J. Hill House, St. Paul, Minnesota

James J Hill House. James J. Hill was an American railroad king, and he founded the Great North Railroad. In 1891 he built his own house, his wife, and ten children and remained there until he died in 1916. Currently, the Minnesota Historical Society manages the house and offers tours to people, groups and schools. 

It offers stunning views of the center of Minneapolis and Mississippi River and was built in a rugged stone design. There are massive houses in the neighborhood that have intricate wood carving in the interior and have modern conveniences such as indoor plumbing and electric light fixtures.

The 200th century Fort Snelling stands on the southern riverbank near the Twin Cities' merge. Built in the 1800s the fortress played a major role in the conflict in 1812 and helped increase the American control on the trade route.

08. Alexander Ramsay House

Alexander Ramsay House. Alexander Ramsay was Minnesota's first Governor between 1815 and 1903. He served in office between 1849 and 1853. In 1872 Ramsay built his house at Irvine Park in Minneapolis. It still exists and is considered a very important Victorian residence for Americans.

Several of the original furniture remains. Initially, the house was very sophisticated with hot and cool hot water and heating and cooling units. Anita Ramsay died in 1964 and donated the property to the Minnesota Historical Society.

13. Wabasha Street Caves

The Wabasha Street Caves is a sandstone cave located on Southshore of the Mississippi River and has been transformed over the past 100 years in events. The caves had once been the home to a speakeasy during the prohibition era which was known to be visited by notorious gangsters. 

In the middle of WWII, the cave restaurant was closed and remained closed through the 1970's and became a disco room. Today Wabasha Street Caves is an ideal location for lunch.

Minnesota Transportation Museum The Minnesota Transportation Museum is situated inside Jackson St. a rare surviving roundhouse. Volunteer guides take visitors to the trainyard at the museum, a large number involving locomotives, Pullman cars, bags, and mailing boxes, and allow for a short trip in a historic caboose. 

It offers specialized activities to delight children and adults; there is also a workshop for machine repair which displays machine restorations. It includes a sightseeing of St. Pauls downtown in the 1955 GMC bus.

17. Bruce Vento Regional Trail & Wildlife Sanctuary

Once a railway yard, these 28 acres of parks were reclaimed in 2005. It is currently the site for an 8.5 km nature walk (15 miles roundtrip). The place is well known as an interesting location for bird watching with ponds and water streams attracting both migratory birds and waterfowl species. 

Visiting the sandstone bluff is also an opportunity to spot birds such as sand owl and black eagle. Though visitors cannot see inside the parks, there exists a cave known as Wakan Tipi (the Spirit House).

In the Twin Cities you can make a beer. It is an extraordinary activity on Saint Paul Island. The VinePark beer factory has adopted the traditional method and incorporated its skills and experience in the production process. Instead of cooking up batches at home, the machine can be used on request for brew of your choice. 

There is also a variety of wine varieties. Before starting, there will be 50 beers and 50 standard beer varieties. Enjoy the mix between hops and barley before boiling. The fermentation process takes two to four weeks, and the brew is ready for sampling.

Those who want to travel the city are on their way on a long Gateway Trail. From the city then move north into Oakdale, Pine Springs and Maplewood. You will travel through the quiet lakes and woods while walking.

26. Go Ice Skating at Rice Park in Winter

Rice Park offers excellent places to skate during the winter months. Its only ice hockey arena is available during the winter. For Minnesota, this really surprised me. However, the Minnesota Wild practice there from time to time.

Rice Park is located near the heart of the city and can also provide an excellent romantic activities during winter as the lights glow around you during the skating. Rice Park is great for being an outdoor recreation facility. In the summertime, you could go to this place with a picnic, watch people, or read a few books on a sunny day.

29. Head to the American Association of Woodturners

You'll have no other similar American woodturners organization. Its mission is to promote woodturning and its crafts around the globe through teaching and promoting. It runs the Gallery of Wood Arts in St. Paul. The museum gift shop offers various exhibits made of wood as well as gifts.

30. Fort Snelling State Park

A few hundred miles south of downtown Minneapolis is Fort Snelling National Park, a popular recreation site that has been designated as a state park since 1962. Day Park is a great destination for all seasons and has a number of wonderful attractions. 

Before visiting the park, be sure to go to the Thomas C. Savage Visitors Center if you need more details about the park. Once you're done exploring, explore a few hiking or biking trails. One of the most popular hikes is the Snelling Lake Loop. The loop takes around an hour to complete.
